Lights to go out in Roswell for Earth Hour
Citizens of Roswell joined millions of people in some of the world’s major capital cities, including Copenhagen, Atlanta, Toronto, Chicago, Melbourne, Brisbane and Tel Aviv, to switch off for Earth Hour.

Keep Roswell Beautiful, sponsoring Earth Hour in North Fulton, was joined by the City of Roswell, citizens and businesses in turning off non-essential lights for one hour on March 29.  Affiliated with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Earth Hour 2008 was held from 8 pm to 9 pm.
Roswell homes, restaurants and businesses used candles or reduced lights for the evening.  Non-essential lights at City Hall and elsewhere in Roswell were cut off or dimmed.  City Manager Kay Love instructed that all city computers be turned off over the weekend.

Earth Hour started in Christ Church, New Zealand, and ended in San Francisco. Experts say the hour will temporarily cut electricity consumption about 5 percent.

Update:  Georgia Power Company reported that in the central business district of Atlanta, electrical consumption was down 4% - or seven megawatt hours - during Earth Hour.  Seven megawatts is enough to power about 1,750 homes.                              Read more
