surrounding areas of the Chattahoochee River. The event was the largest single volunteer effort to beautify Georgia’s water resources. Last year, Keep Roswell Beautiful's River Alive effort won first place in Georgia.
Georgia has more than 70,100 miles of rivers and streams.
Individuals, neighborhoods and scout troops, schools, churches, clubs and service organizations volunteered to make a difference for the Chattahoochee River. Litter pick up was along the Chattahoochee River and surrounding roads and waterways that are part of the watershed. This year’s event extended from Garrard’s Landing in Roswell to Morgan Falls Dam, an increased area of coverage that challenged the participants and planners. Other activities included an interactive educational expo with arts and crafts activities for children that focus on understanding the watershed and clean water issues.
As part of the annual cleanup, KRB's Great Roswell Duck Race was conducted on Big Creek with 500 ducks racing for cash prizes.
The North Fulton clean up is co-sponsored by Keep Roswell Beautiful, the City of Roswell, the City of Alpharetta, the Chattahoochee Nature Center, and Keep Sandy Springs Beautiful.
Partners include Harry’s Farmers Market, SuperTARGET, Starbucks, Kiwanis Club of Historic Roswell, Windward Rotary and Nirvana.
Educational Expo participants included Georgia Project WET, Fulton County Adopt-A-Stream; Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, Captain Planet Foundation, Litter It Costs You, Ecological Solutions, ISE, National Park Service, Clean Air Campaign, REI, Autrey Mill, Honda, Audubon, North Fulton Hospital, Step It Up, Shared Forest, Environ and the Chattahoochee Nature Center.
Rivers Alive was chosen as the perfect tie-in to the Great Roswell Duck Race because it focuses on water quality and the importance of keeping the waterways clean for recreation use and of course, for the wildlife in the area. The idea for the Annual Great Duck Race came from Frank Hasty, a board member of Keep Roswell Beautiful.
