Keep Roswell Beautiful has an innovative, exciting way to teach about the environment to residents in Roswell. The Earth Balloon is a 22 ft tall and 22 ft wide inflatable classroom that allows a class of 25 students to experience the Earth in a thrilling new way. The Earth Balloon is made up of satellite images of the Earth and can be used to teach water conservation, habitats, geography, math, time zones, animal and human migrations, map projections, climates, human impact, etc. As a mobile classroom, the Earth Balloon has found an especially important role in Environmental Education as more and more schools are unable to take fieldtrips. The possibilities are endless.
The Earth Balloon is now a staple of the Environmental Education program in Roswell. In August 2007, the KRB Board gave the Earth Balloon as a gift to the children of Roswell, while still retaining ownership of it. The City’s Environmental Education Specialist was able to develop a curriculum loosely based on the Earth Balloon’s accompanying curriculum that educates on issues affecting our area and motivates people to get involved in the preservation and conservation of our local resources. Within the first year, over 5,500 students, teachers, and parents have entered the Earth Balloon through the Pacific Ocean and gone on an exploration of the Earth from the inside out! Teachers become trained on the Earth Balloon curriculum and are then able to teach their own class inside the Balloon, or they can choose to have the City’s Environmental Education Specialist lead the class. Keep Roswell Beautiful’s Earth Balloon is the only one in the southeast, and, to the best of our knowledge, Keep Roswell Beautiful is the only KAB affiliate to have one.
