Southern Red Oak - Quercus falcata
|
Asymmetric lobes on leaf, with bristle tips and a U-shaped base. The leaf lobes at the main vein are curved. The leaf shapes can vary greatly. Bark is dark gray and furrowed. Fruit: acorn cap has tight scales. Fall color: brown with some red. Part of the red-oak group
The southern red oak is a very common tree in the Roswell area. Notice in the diagram, the middle leaf does not have a U-shaped base. This is quite unusual and not at all characteristic of the southern red oak species
Memory Aid: Though the leaf-shapes can vary,
look for a long "middle" lobe and a U-shaped base
on the leaves, which stands for "soUthern red oak."
