A small tree having a gray, distinctively sinewy (resembling muscle tissue) trunk and smooth bark. Its leaves have doubly-serrated edges. This tree is most often found along streams. Also known as ironwood or musclewood.
Focus on the trunk’s smooth bark but "muscle-like" shape to help identify this small tree. You can easily see both of these trunk characteristics in the photo below.
